The Senate's Blank Check for War on Iran
by Chris Floyd
by Chris Floyd
DIGG THIS
As you may know – unless you rely on the corporate media for your news, of course – yesterday the U.S. Senate unanimously declared that Iran was committing acts of war against the United States: a 97-0 vote to give George W. Bush a clear and unmistakable casus belli for attacking Iran whenever Dick Cheney tells him to.
The bipartisan Senate resolution – the brainchild (or rather the bilechild) of Fightin' Joe Lieberman – affirmed as official fact all of the specious, unproven, ever-changing allegations of direct Iranian involvement in attacks on the American forces now occupying Iraq. The Senators appear to have relied heavily on the recent New York Times story by Michael Gordon that stovepiped unchallenged Pentagon spin directly onto the paper's front page. As Firedoglake points out, John McCain cited the heavily criticized story on the Senate floor as he cast his vote.
It goes without saying that all of this is a nightmarish replay of the run-up to the war of aggression against Iraq: The NYT funneling false flag stories from Bush insiders. Warmongers citing the NYT stories as "proof" justifying any and all action to "defend the Homeland." Credulous and craven Democratic politicians swallowing the Bush line hook and sinker.
To be sure, stout-hearted Dem tribunes like Dick Durbin insisted that their support for declaring that Iran is "committing acts of war" against the United States should not be taken as an "authorization of military action." This is shaky-knees mendacity at its finest. Having officially affirmed that Iran is waging war on American forces, how, pray tell, can you then deny the president when he asks (if he asks) for authorization to "defend our troops"? Answer: you can't. And you know it.
This vote is the clearest signal yet that there will be no real opposition to a Bush Administration attack on Iran. This is yet another blank check from these slavish, ignorant goons; Bush can cash it anytime. This is, in fact, the post-surge "Plan B" that's been mooted lately in the Beltway. As you recall, there was much throwing about of brains on the subject of reviving the "Iraq Study Group" plan when the "surge" (or to call it by its right name, the "punitive escalation") inevitably fails. Bush put the kibosh on that this week ("Him not gonna do nothin' that Daddy's friends tell him to do! Him a big boy, him the decider!"), but that doesn't mean there isn't a fall-back position – or rather, a spring-forward position: an attack on Iran, to rally the nation behind the "war leader" and reshuffle the deck in Iraq.
Of course, the United States is already at war with Iran. We are directing covert ops and terrorist attacks inside Iran, with the help of groups that our own government has declared terrorist renegades. We are kidnapping Iranian officials in Iraq and holding them hostage. We have a bristling naval armada on Iran's doorstep, put there for the express purpose of threatening Tehran with military action. The U.S. Congress has overwhelmingly passed measures calling for the overthrow of the Iranian government. And now the U.S. Senate has unanimously declared that Iran is waging war on America, and has given official notice that this will not be tolerated. It is only a very small step to move from this war in all but name to the full monty of an overt military assault.
Now draw these dangerous streams together, and you have a portrait of the blunt and brutal group-mind at work in the leadership of the world's most powerful nation. The folly, fantasy and death-fetish of the Bush Regime – long evident to anyone who cared to see – were finally "revealed" in the mainstream media recently by the quasi-official Establishment oracle, Bob Woodward. His latest insider portrait, Plan of Attack, offers – in the usual, easily-gummed pabulum form – a few tastes of the bitter truth behind the Regime's mad, ruinous war crime in Iraq.
The corrosive nihilism at the heart of the enterprise ate through the gaudily-painted surface most tellingly in a single anecdote. Woodward asks George W. Bush how he thinks history will regard his adventure in Iraq. Bush, gazing out the window, shrugs and waves the question away. "History, we don't know," he says. "We'll all be dead." No fine, faith-filled talk here about God and Jesus and the immortal soul responsible for its actions throughout all eternity – the kind of zealous patter Bush favors in public statements. This was just the cold, rotten, meaningless core of his grand vision: "We'll all be dead." So who cares? Après moi, le deluge.
Who would have thought the floodwaters of this death vision would have risen so high again so soon? Yet here they are again, beating against the gates.
UPDATE: Jonathan Schwarz points out that all of the Senate's Democratic candidates for president voted for Lieberman's Iran War amendment: Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, and Joe Biden. Just in case you were expecting a saner foreign policy after the 2008 election.
UPDATE II: Meanwhile, George Milhouse Bush wants to make one thing perfectly clear: even in the highly unlikely (if not totally impossible) event that the Senate grows a rudimentary spine and tries to place the slightest obstacle in the way of a military attack on Iran, the Commander Guy will peremptorily veto it and instigate the mass murder anyway.
Spencer Ackerman at TPM Cafe found this gem of arrogant defiance in "a little-noticed letter from the White House to Carl Levin (D-MI), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee." The main subject of the letter was a similar vow to veto any restrictions on Bush's ability to continue his war crime in Iraq. The passage concerning Iran might seem redundant now, after the Senate's vote on Lieberman's "Persia delenda
The Senate Blank Check for a War on Iran ?? from Bush and democrats?
That vote is only symbolic. It was not needed.
Presidents also have the right to attack other countries anytime they deem it necessary (and congress has the right to declare war). High school graduates know F.D.R. and Truman decided the outcome of World War 2, not congress.
The constitution gives presidents the right to attack countries without the permission of congress (Article II Section 2). Any attempt by congress to limit a president's constitutional right would violate "separation of powers".
1) Constitution:
Article II, Section 2
"President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States."
Article II, Section 1.
"The executive power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America."
2) SUPREME COURT RULINGS:
a) Johnson v. Eisentrager, 339 U.S. 763, 789 (1950) (President has authority to deploy United States armed forces "abroad or to any particular region")
b) Fleming v. Page, 50 U.S. (9 How.) 603, 615 (1850) ("As commander-in-chief, [the President] is authorized to direct the movements of the naval and military forces placed by law at his command, and to employ them in the manner he may deem most effectual")
c) Loving v. United States, 517 U.S. 748, 776 (1996) (Scalia, J., concurring in part and concurring in judgment) (The "inherent powers" of the Commander in Chief "are clearly extensive.")
d) Maul v. United States, 274 U.S. 501, 515-16 (1927) (Brandeis %26amp; Holmes, JJ., concurring) (President "may direct any revenue cutter to cruise in any waters in order to perform any duty of the service")
e) Massachusetts v. Laird, 451 F.2d 26, 32 (1st Cir. 1971) (the President has "power as Commander-in-Chief to station forces abroad"); Authority to Use United States Military Forces in Somalia, 16 Op. O.L.C. 6 (1992).
Reply:Just goes to show that the US is a rogue nation.
Reply:sorry to long to read
Reply:Iran declared war on the United States in 1978 and has reaffirmed that position repeatedly. It does intelligent people well to remeber the lessons of World War Two. In the case of the Jews, if someone says they are going to exterminate you, believe them. In the case of France if someone declares War(Germany) on you believe it. They both ignored what was being said and they both paid severly for ignoring a threat.
If your neighbor repeatedly told you he was going to kill your dog would you ignore him, and if so if he does eventually kill your dog, who's fault is it? Yours or his...it's yours it's not like he didn't warn you. Iran is the same technically since President Eisenhower screwed up the relations with Iran they have wanted to destroy the US ever since.
Iranian Students were trying to build a Democracy during Ike's presidency and he chose to support the Sha a King over democracy and we have looked like Hypocrits ever since. He told the Sha to get the country under control without realizing that the middle eastern idea of getting control of something is to be done by fear and torture. So the Sha tortured and terrorized the citizens who were only seeking a Democracy. Now the only hope to avoid future generations being thrown into a World War again is to get a Democracy up an running in Iraq. Have you been to Iraq, I have, you should go and stay a while and talk to the citizens there. Because they do want the Democracy to work and most of them are pissed off because they don't have our standards of living yet. Which by the way America didn't attain over night we had to work for it. They are starting to understand that now. I hope we do kick the crap out of Iran and this time give it over to the students they aren't as ignorant as the religiously brainwashed masses of Iran.

Something creepy about the clintons and the bush's????
Seriously, can everyone have an open-mind here. Let's erase our favortism and actually look at something here.
Is bush and clinton really trying to create a dynasty?
-Goerge Bush Senior and Bill Clinton are best friends?
-George Bush Junior said he believed a DEMOCRAT named hillary clinton is owed her dues to enter the white house a few days ago?
-Bill Clinton knew about Al Qaeda (Bush seniors start)..and keeps it under wraps?
-Bush Junior flew Ben ladins family out of the USA without any interogations?
- All the paper were missing when Bill clinton left the white house?
And these people are great friends with one another! Is it possible that they have come together and planned to have this done? Presidency? Iraq? Perhaps to cover there shady dealings in the white house? Do you think they are somehow scared that obama will ruin there plans--them being McCain Bush and Clinton??
Something very scary is going on, and i can sense it..
can u?
Something creepy about the clintons and the bush's????
I agree with you that something shady happened in the whitehouse. Otherwise, why won't Hillary just release that info. regarding the whitehouse years and be done with the speculation. I don't know what they were involved in but it can't be good for america if they don't want us knowing anything about it.
Reply:Clintons have lots of shady history. And....have you seen this? http://prorev.com/2007/12/hillary-clinto...
Reply:bin ladens family isnt terrorists hes a black sheep. But i tend to agree ill take your point one step further isnt there something creepy about libs and how its like were letting the enemy run for president?
Reply:All i know is Obama will put an end to their dynasty in November.
Reply:Didn't you ask this question before?
I don't think there are any conspiracies between them, but is it time we had a president not named Bush or Clinton.
I would be happy with Hillary, but it is a little uncomfortable having presidents from the same family so often.

Bush can seize American citizens as enemy combatants?
Yes - Bush can now seize American citizens as enemy combatants. Anyone can be declared an enemy combatant by Bush, even a citizen of the US, and Bush doesn't have to explain or justify it to anyone. Hello secret prison, hello torture, bye phone call, bye right to an attorney, bye trial by a jury of your peers, bye to even knowing what you are charged with. This is outrageous! The conservatives have trampled the constitution and turned it into toilet paper! And it all happened during the Foley scandal!

Bush can seize American citizens as enemy combatants?
I am certainly not a Democrat and definitely not a Liberal (at least not the tax and spend kind)
But notme is right, this is a serious danger. This means anyone can be picked up off the streets for any reason, and shipped to a secret prison. And don't think the Supreme Court will be able to save you. In the worse case scenario, a given person could just be picked up off the street and since there would only be a missing person report on file with the local police. The Supreme Court would never even get a chance to hear the case. Meanwhile, the Federal government has imprisoned this person in a remote detention center. Sound familiar, that is exact what Stalin did.
How can a conservative follow the policies of extreme left wing psychopaths?
And remember any power you give a Republican President will eventually be wielded by a Democratic one.
I certainly would not want Hilary Clinton or her ilk to have such power.
Reply:The constitution trumps a law. I expect the Supreme Court to fix this problem. However someone may rot in a secret jail for a while first.
Reply:They had a problem finding anyone evil enough to figure out how to torture Jose Padia. They want to torture him but he is a citizen
That combined with expostfacto. They want to torture the people that are currently detained. Normally a new law does not cover incidents that occurred before the law.

The bill itself only talks about Aliens. I think it's an error that it doesn't specifically exclude citizens and instead fails to mention them. It does specifically say that Citizens cannot be tried by a military tribunal. Therefore, they must get regular court rights.
It's badly written I'll say that for it.
Reply:I agree, completely outrageous. There are people that have been held for years already without being charged. Many times their families do not even know what happens to them and reports them missing to the authorities only to find out they have been arrested. This administration rules by fear. I guess Bush really meant it when he said " You are either with us or against us". You must agree and comply with all the BS they dish out or risk losing your freedom. So much for the land of the free. The brave are imprisoned for disagreeing.

George Bush rant.?
I didn't want any complaints of swearing in the big list, but George Bush is just a B A S T A R D isn't he. Has a bigger
B A S T A R D ever walked the earth in the 21st century. He's done so many things wrong, how the hell does he sleep at night? How does he think he's a good president? Osama did a terible thing with 9/11, but surely Bush as given the order to kill more innocent people in Iraq then were killed on 9/11, They both need to be arrested, and share a cell togther for the rest of their lives.
and he said Nelson mandeler was dead, he doesn't even read the papers, he was at the unvailing of his new statue only a few weeks ago. I think his death would make the front page of every paper. Doesn't he just take a look, just a quick scan of the mornings head lines at breakfast.
George Bush rant.?
You know how he sleeps at night? He gets coked up, drunk and passes out. Lets just face it .. i've heard from many people who work in the government .. 9/11 was and inside project to get America to choose Safety over Liberty, which goes against what we stand for. My brother was stationed in DC the time of all of this .. there was no plane that hit the pentagon. 9/11 helped a lot of people out. Next we're going to Iran, yeah, believe it .. my brothers friend has already been sent there. There many troops already there. Proof here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hiPrsc9g...

Did I fall for this - or what ? Truth be told - these "George Bush - did - it" - rants are becoming comedy to my ears . Joke...have you ever been f##### behind a bush?
A man with no arms or legs is sunbathing on the beach. He is approached by three beautiful young women who take pity on him.
The first says to him, "Have you ever been hugged?"
The man shakes his head, and she leans down and gives him a big hug.
The second says to him, "Have you ever been kissed?"
He shakes his head. She kisses him.
Rather abruptly, the third girl asks, "Have you ever been f*#*/d?!
"No," says the man, his eyes lighting up.
"Well, you are now....the tide's coming in."

Two Scotsmen are walking down a country lane.
"Och, Duncan," says Jimmy all of a sudden. "I dinnae half need a s#/t."
"Well, just go behind a bush and do it, then," replies his mate.
So Jimmy goes behind a bush, and after a while he shouts, "Have you got any paper?"

Is it just a goddamn piece of paper?
Isn't the constitution part of what makes America, well America. So why would Bush refer to it as "just a goddamn piece of paper"? Maybe I'm crazy but without the constitution, I don't think any of us would be living the way we are now. Any thoughts on this?
Is it just a goddamn piece of paper?
GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the [Patriot] act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.
"I don't give a goddamn," Bush retorted. "I'm the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way."
"Mr. President," one aide in the meeting said. "There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution."
"Stop throwing the Constitution in my face," Bush screamed back. "It's just a goddamned piece of paper!"

Plastic Surgery Miracles
Three Texas plastic surgeons were playing golf together and discussing surgeries they had performed.
One of them said, "I'm the best plastic surgeon in Texas. A concert pianist lost 7 fingers in an accident, I reattached them, and 8 months later he performed a private concert for the Queen of England."
One of the others said. "That's nothing. A young man lost both arms and legs in an accident, I reattached them, and 2 years later he won a gold medal in 5 field events in the Olympics."
The third surgeon said, "You guys are amateurs. Several years ago a cowboy who was high on cocaine and alcohol rode a horse head-on into a train traveling 80 miles an hour. All I had left to work with was the horse's *** and a cowboy hat.
Now he's President of the United States."

Hilarious Bush Joke, Ten points to the person that enters the funniest Bush joke.?
BUSH GETS CODED MESSAGE FROM OSAMA BIN LADEN
After numerous rounds of 'We don't even know if bin Laden is still alive', bin Laden decides to send George W. a letter in his own writing to let him know that he is still in the game.
Bush opens the letter and sees only a coded message: "370HSSV-0773H". He can't figure it out, so he asks Karl Rove.
As Bush is pondering the mysterious message lying on the desk before him, Colin Powell enters the Oval Office. When he sees the paper and reads what is written on it, he asks, "Sir, where did that come from?"
Bush replies testily, "Supposedly it's a message from Osama bin Laden. But what the hell does '370HSSV-0773H' mean?"
Powell clears his throat and replies, "Mr. President, I think you've been looking at the message upside down."
Hilarious Bush Joke, Ten points to the person that enters the funniest Bush joke.?
Haha! That made my day. Thanks.
President George Bush is visiting an elementary school today and he visits one of the classes. They are in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asks the President if he would like to lead the class in the discussion of the word, "tragedy."
So the illustrious leader asks the class for an example of a "tragedy."
One little boy stands up and offers, "If my best friend, who lives next door, is playing in the street and a car comes along and runs him over, that would be a tragedy." "No," says Bush, "that would be an ACCIDENT."
A little girl raises her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove off a cliff, killing everyone involved, that would be a tragedy."
"I'm afraid not," explains Mr. President. "That's what we would call a GREAT LOSS."
The room goes silent. No other children volunteer. President Bush searches the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"
Finally, way in the back of the room, a small boy raises his hand.
In a quiet voice he says, "If Air Force One, carrying Mr. %26amp; Mrs. Bush, were struck by a missile and blown up to smithereens, by a terrorist like Osama bin Laden, that would be a tragedy."
"Fantastic," exclaims Bush, "that's right. And can you tell me WHY that would be a TRAGEDY?"
"Well," says the boy, "because it wouldn't be an accident, and it certainly wouldn't be a great loss."
there are many variations to this joke but the punchline is the same in each case.

Einstein ponders for a few seconds and asks, "Could I have a blackboard and some chalk?"
Saint Peter snaps his fingers and a blackboard and chalk instantly appear. Einstein proceeds to describe with arcane mathematics and symbols his theory of relativity.
Saint Peter is suitably impressed. "You really ARE Einstein!" he says. "Welcome to heaven!"
The next to arrive is Picasso. Once again, Saint Peter asks for credentials.
Picasso asks, "Mind if I use that blackboard and chalk?"
Saint Peter says, "Go ahead."
Picasso erases Einstein's equations and sketches a truly stunning mural with just a few strokes of chalk.
Saint Peter claps. "Surely you are the great artist you claim to be!" he says. "Come on in!"
Then Saint Peter looks up and sees George W. Bush. Saint Peter scratches his head and says, "Einstein and Picasso both managed to prove their identity. How can you prove

George W. looks bewildered and says, "Who are Einstein and Picasso?"
Saint Peter sighs and says, "Come on in, George."

Anyone know where I can find a copy of George W. Bush's speech on reasons for waging war with Iraq?
Doing a term paper on the Iraqi War (2003)... Need a copy of Bush's outline for waging a preemptive strike in speech form. Any help is greatly appreciated
Anyone know where I can find a copy of George W. Bush's speech on reasons for waging war with Iraq?
You are not going to get it from the news media or anybody who runs around claiming that 'Bush lied.'
The last thing they want you to see is what he really said.
Your best bet would www.whitehouse.gov
Reply:State of the union address 2003. Part 8.
Reply:Which one? The S.O.B. changes the story a dozen times a day!
Reply:Google or ask.com has the data as well as the Library of Congess in Washington, D.C. which even records presidential farts while in office. Narrow your search by giving dates if you can, otherwise you are in for an "all-niter" and start the coffee machine now!

Is President George W. Bush the best ever?
ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF PRESIDENT BUSH...
I attacked and took over two countries.
I spent the U.S. surplus and bankrupted the Treasury.
I shattered the record for biggest annual deficit in history.
I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.
I set all-time record for biggest drop in the history of the stock market.
I am the first president in decades to execute a federal prisoner.
I am the first president in US history to enter office with a criminal record.
In my first year in office I set the all-time record for most days on vacation by any president in US history.
After taking the entire month of August off for vacation, I presided over the worst security failure in US history.
I set the record for most campaign fund raising trips by any president in US history.
In my first two years in office over 2 million Americans lost their job.
I cut unemployment benefits for more out-of-work Americans than any other president in US history.
I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.
I appointed more convicted criminals to administration positions than any president in US history.
I set the record for the fewest press conferences of any president since the advent of TV.
I signed more laws and executive orders amending the Constitution than any other president in US history.
I presided over the biggest energy crises in US history and refused to intervene when corruption was revealed.
I presided over the highest gasoline prices in US history and refused to use the national reserves as past presidents have.
I cut health care benefits for war veterans.
I set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously take to the streets to protest me (15 million people), shattering the record for protest against any person in the history of
mankind.
I dissolved more international treaties than any president in US history.
I've made my presidency the most secretive and unaccountable of any in US history.
Members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in US history. (The 'poorest' multimillionaire, Condoleeza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her).
I presided over the biggest corporate stock market fraud in any market in any country in the history of the world.
I am the first president in US history to order a US attack and military occupation of a sovereign nation, and I did so against the will of the United Nations and the world community.
I have created the largest government department bureaucracy in the history of the United States.
I set the all-time record for biggest annual budget spending increases, more than any other president in US history.
I am the first president in US history to have the United Nations remove the US from the Human Rights Commission.
I am the first president in US history to have the United Nations remove the US from the Elections Monitoring Board.
I removed more checks and balances, and have the least amount of congressional oversight than any presidential administration in US history.
I rendered the entire United Nations irrelevant.
I withdrew from the World Court of Law.
I refused to allow inspectors access to US prisoners of war and by default no longer abide by the Geneva Conventions.
I am the first president in US history to refuse United Nations election inspectors access during the 2002 US elections.
I am the all-time US (and world) record holder for most corporate campaign donations.
The biggest lifetime contributor to my campaign, who is also one of my best friends, presided over one of the largest corporate bankruptcy frauds in world history (Kenneth Lay, former CEO of Enron Corporation).
I spent more money on polls and focus groups than any president in US history.
I am the first president to run and hide when the US came under attack (and then lied, saying the enemy had the code to Air Force 1)
I am the first US president to establish a secret shadow government.
I took the world's sympathy for the US after 911, and in less than a year made the US the most resented country in the world (possibly the biggest diplomatic failure in US and world history).
I am the first US president in history to have a majority of the people of Europe (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and stability.
I am the first US president in history to have the people of South Korea more threatened by the US than by their immediate neighbor, North Korea.
I changed US policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.
I set the all-time record for number of administration appointees who violated US law by not selling their huge investments in corporations bidding for gov't contracts.
I have removed more freedoms and civil liberties for Americans than any other president in US history. In a little over two years I have created the most divided country in decades, possibly the most divided that the US has been since the civil war.
I entered office with the strongest economy in US history and in less than two years turned every single economic category heading straight down.
I fired federal attorneys for political reasons and did not inform the Senate.
I have not fully made enough armor both for vehicles and body armor for US military in Iraq.
RECORDS AND REFERENCES:
I have at least one conviction for drunk driving in Maine (Texas driving record has been erased and is not available).
I was AWOL from the National Guard and deserted the military during a time of war. I refuse to take a drug test or even answer any questions about drug use.
All records of my tenure as governor of Texas have been spirited away to my father1s library, sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.
All records of any SEC investigations into my insider trading or bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.
All minutes of meetings of any public corporation for which I served on the board are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.
Any records or minutes from meetings I (or my VP) attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review.
Bush also went AWOL...and had his hand in the demolition of the WTC.
Bush referred to the US Constitution as a God damn piece of paper.
He was wrong about WMD. That got the US into a war with Iraq. The UN said there were no weapons and we still went to war anyway. At least Colin Powell did the right thing and resigned. Too bad Bush doesn't have Powell's intregrity
His initial response to hurricane katrina was horrible.
The "no one left behind" idea is terrible: dumb down education so children look smarter without learning what they should.
The patriot act violates the bill of rights. How can we talk about the freedom of democracy here in the US when the government keeps taking away those freedoms?
His tax cuts did not go to those at the bottom of the income bracket.
He raised interest rates for those taking loans to go to college.
Abstinence taught for sex education does not work. Safe sex should also be taught in school as well.
He talked about border protection and sealing off America from Mexico, then gives the Saudis (i think it was them) control over offshipping cargo on our coast. I thought we were supposed to be protecting our borders, not selling that right off to the highest bidder!
His environmental policy is not helping reduce global warming. His solution is clean-burning coal! That will never happen!
Is President George W. Bush the best ever?
Hmm, I bet that this long list could be continued almost endlessly!
The distraction from the topic that someone else brought up by mentioning Jimmy Carter's performance is just a distraction, and nothing but a distraction, from the issue. One has nothing to do with the other. This is not an issue of party evaluation, it's a question about George W. Bush and his performance, and yes, he is the worst President since WW II. He is the ranch vacation sabre-rattler president. Even the pro-US portion of the world has lost a lot of the respect for us as a nation.
Good thing that this spook will be over "soon", unfortunately not fast enough! I am a conservative, but that president is ... there is absolutely no word strong enough that I could think of ...

Contribute some ideas for a "What if?" Paper?
I have this midterm paper I'm writing for my history class: What if Al-Qaeda did not attack America on September 11, 2001?
I have two books; one on the Patriot act; the other on Civil liberties in a Post-9/11 world.
What are some good ideas to include (e.g., Bush would have not been re-elected in 2004.) The paper has a 5-8 page requirement. I was thinking along the lines of American legislation; politics, the economy; "The War on Terror" and so on...
What do you think would happen, and how could I incorporate that into my paper? Thanks in advance.
%26gt;%26gt;There were no good sections; so I always turn to my trusty LGBT =] (So don't ask please.)
Contribute some ideas for a "What if?" Paper?
There would have not been such a justification for war in Iraq, and the US would have been more likely to have had to prove Weapon's of Mass Destruction in the forum of the United Nations. Since the US could not prove WMD's, there would either have not been a war in Iraq or it would have been much different in it's scope with a larger number of other nations participating. There would not have been the scandal of Abu Ghraib with pictures of prisoner abuse being circulated worldwide portraying the US as inhumane, as well as Guantanamo Bay not becoming a prison for suspected terrorists nor the passage of the Patriot Act curtailing civil liberties. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act authorized secret court proceedings prior to the Patriot Act, but the Patriot Act allowed investigations without the court approval that was previously required.
One of the largest "What If" scenarios is the 2002 mid term congressional elections. Bush had a very low popularity rating stemming from his questionable election decided by the Supreme Court. In all likelihood, the Democratic Party would have taken control of both Houses of Congress in 2002. (The actual 2002 elections resulted in a Republican President seeing his party gain House seats for the first time in over 100 years). Bush would not have been able to get some of his more controversial lifetime Judicial nominations approved by the Senate.
There is also what al-Qaeda said was the reason for 9/11... the Palestinian question. The West Bank is now ruled by the Fatah party, while Gaza is ruled by Hamas. This divide would have been unlikely prior to 9/11, but afterwards Muslim extremists felt more empowered which also led to Israels brief war with Lebanon.
Without 9/11, there would (most likely)...
-Not be a war in Afghanistan.
-Not be a war in Iraq.
-Not have been an Israeli-Lebanese War.
-Not be a Patriot Act.
-Not be a judiciary composed of Bush's preferred highly-conservative nominees.
-Not be less American world influence diluted by Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.
-Not be an Iranian or North Korean government willing to become confrontational with the US after Bush called those nations an 'Axis of Evil'... military weaknesses exposed by the Iraq war and decreased military recruitment levels have made those governments feel more empowered.
-Not be such a high rise in gasoline prices, due to the volatility in the Arab world caused by market speculation regarding the Iraq war and the questionable status of Iran which has led to a downturn in the US economy.
Reply:You might wanna try including an emotional overview as well as legal and factual. The current psychological state of the Western and Eastern worlds would be slightly better I think, both in terms of actual countries and their native people and communities living within other countries. The state of fear and paranoia we have been forced to live in would not be as strong, and hostilities between Western and Eastern cultures would not be as apparent.
On a personal note, I believe if you guys hadn't of had 9/11, we wouldn't have had the 7/7 bombings or the rest of the trouble we've been having recently.
Reply:That huge waste of money, Homeland Security wouldn't exist. CIA would remain at the top of the intelligence ladder. The Taliban would remain in control of Afghanistan. Iraq would just be a place "over there". I believe that Ariel Sharon wouldn't have taken such dramatic steps as creating the barrier without the events of 9-11. Libya would still have WMD. The US economy wouldn't be trillions and trillions of dollars in debt. The US wouldn't be have the scorn of most of the world. Of course we wouldn't really be liked, I mean bosom buddy liked, but at least they wouldn't be afraid of what we will do.
Reply:Good question. I assume the topic implies there was no attack at all or does it imply that 9/11 was the fault of another terrorist organisation like the CIA?
If it is the former then you will need to research the US foreign policy, domestic policy etc parameters of the time (aims, strategies etc) from both the republican and democratic perspective (as there is no guarantee that Bush would have been re-elected) and apply possible outcomes to the period since 9/11.
You could also consider the world perspective %26amp; the US relationships with the Coalition of the Willing (espcially Britain %26amp; Australia), the Middle East, the UN %26amp; Al-Qaeda to name a few.
I think the 5-8 page restriction will in the end be insufficient as the topic will able you to explore many possibilities.
Good luck
Reply:Well yes, Dubya wouldn't have been reelected. Our economy would be much better off. We would not be involved in a war in Afghanistan (or maybe in Iraq)..
Sorry, that's all I can think of, I've been cramming for my Latin and AP Biology midterms all night!
Reply:In addition to the other suggestions, you could describe the renewed focus on immigration reform (with a new rationale-- national security). Oh, and maybe Rosie O'Donnell would be stuck on some JFK assassination conspiracy.

George Mcgovern wants Bush and Cheney impeached. But he doesn't want Democrats removed. Why?
On NPR yesterday George Macgovern (losing Democrat candidate for President years back) wants Congress to impeach Bush and Cheney. He wrote an OpEd piece in some paper stateing various reasons.
He sited various reasons for impeachment in an extended litany. He wants the current adminsitration impeached for the "good of the country". But he seemed to absolve members of Congress (especially Democrats) of any and all fault for failing to do so.
Because Congress has oversight on what the President and Vice President does, IF the President and Vice President have done wrong (I don't think anything they have done actually qualifies for impeachment. Poor judgement maybe.) why isn't he wanting the members of Congress removed for gullibility, complacency, complicity, or incompetance as well?

cause he is a democrat
Reply:That's because the Bush administration is not effectively leading our country.

So Nixon's congress was complicit in Watergate by your standards?

on impeachment: that requires a crime. the Dems in Congress haven't committed any crimes. they've failed to hold the administration accountable, and that's a tragedy, but not a crime.
the President and Vice President, however, have committed crimes. they have knowingly and with full intention lied to the American public in order to pursue a cause that would profit themselves and their friends. no administration has ever been worse for America than the current one, and they deserve to be imprisoned.

The Bush presidency major reason for recession?
im doing a english paper on this topic and wanted your opinions and facts.........."The Bush presidency is major reason why the United States is facing a recession. Suggest logical reasoning for your position."................................. and wanted your opinions and facts
The Bush presidency major reason for recession?
Well it certainly sounds like whoever chose the title of the paper has made his or her opinion loud and clear.
Because the country wasn't already in financial turmoil before Bush was in office or anything... Bush had to try and clean up after the huge mess Clinton left. Also forgot that the Senate and Congress are mainly Democratic. Do you recall the checks and balances system? Bush doesn't make all the rules, nor Congress nor the Senate. Bush is the scapegoat, not everything is his fault. The sad catch is iff Bush were to veto everything then Congress and the Senate would not support him either. Give and take, sometimes the hands are tied.
If you read Fortune 500, the Wall Street Journal, other financial publications or watch various financial media on television you would know that we are not (yet) in a recession. Remember the media is all about focusing on the negative stuff. Never do they focus on the hopeful prospects. I have seen plenty of optimistic changes in the business world (investment, expanding the workforce, etc).
HOWEVER, for Americans that live in the middle class it's an entirely different story. Plenty of job losses, increase in health care costs, taxes, the housing market is out of control, interest rates (specifically for lower to middle class families) are insane, and the price of oil...good gosh.
There is no reason for oil to be the price it is today. People attribute it to the war in Iraq and/or inflation but those are excuses, distractions really, to raise prices. All we're doing is making the rich son of a guns who deal in oil that much richer. Yes, legislature needs to be put in place to control oil but we cannot always control international trade. Still we need legislature to intervene *sound of crickets waiting for support from the Senate and Congress*.
I think what we are seeing happen is that the years of being underpaid and overly taxed are catching up to the lower and middle class. Credit card companies literally prey on these families, suckering them with high credit availability and suddenly changing the interest rates so that people can barely meet the minimum. What happens? Well the bills increase of course. It's a vicious cycle. By people only making the minimum payments they aren't paying off all of the principal from the interest rates therefore the bills steadily increase. They end up in deeper debt and I think you get the picture. Again we need legislature to intervene...but...see above.
Think about the cost of gas. For someone who is blessed to not have to live a lower or middle class lifestyle filling up the car with $50 worth of gas is no big deal. Yet, think about the mom who earns minimum wage and has children to feed- $50 is A LOT of money to take away. Wow, the tax on gas is huge- why in the world would Democrats reduce this money maker??
Healthcare costs. Premiums are so high people are not able to afford it, or, they pay high premiums for minimal health care coverage. It's not just the fault of the companies they work for, it's also the greed of the insurance companies. Again..legislature...
Interest rates. The housing market is at a stand still right now. The government is trying by reducing the prime interest rate and by offering tax relief but that is just scratching the surface. Bush's presidency will end; the relief he is trying to put into place will only last so long, do you really thing the Democrats can or will do better? Don't be deceived, they are coming for our wallets and unfortunately the middle class pays first.
Really, the lower and middle class are suffering and who gets the blame? Bush and the Republicans when in fact several Democratic programs which REQUIRE an increase in taxes have only fueled the turmoil. The very programs that were supposedly put in place to help people in the low and middle classes have back fired and our costing them MORE.
Democrats greatly INCREASE taxes in deceitful ways. They sugar coat things with "better this program" "better that program" "relief to the hard working Americans" yet when that paycheck comes people's eyes nearly pop out at the increase in taxes. What do you expect? How do you think the Democratic government is going to pay for all of these "better" programs? Your tax dollars!
The common myth is that the Democrats fight for the middle class but that's a crock. They are nothing but big talkers yet when it all comes down to it they increases taxes for everyone and guess who suffers the most? The middle class! Yet still the Republicans get blamed. "You took away this that and the other thing." Well, those were the programs that the Democrats put into place in order to tax you...the programs obviously failed so they're made obsolete. Look at that, less taxes deducted.
What's going to happen if a Democrat is elected into office- how is the tax formulation going to change? Oh yes, it's going to change very soon. How about in 2010 when Bush's tax cuts expire. I'm telling you this right now, the Democrats WON'T continue them. The Dems WILL increase them and hold onto your hats because the ride is going to get bumpy.
See, Democrats put on a good song and dance but when it comes down to the wire, they go after the very people they said they were fighting for.
Lastly, the myth I'm sure you've heard about "the rich don't pay as much as the poor" is a CROCK too. Have you ever looked at a tax table? Have you noticed the percentage increase as the salaries increase? All these lies about the upper classes finding ways to cheat the taxes and getting money back are nothing but lies. Have you ever sat down with someone who earns a 6 figure income and see the look of horror on his or her face when they realize the taxes they OWE? Where is their relief? Not that much. Why do you think that the tax relief that Bush put into place caters people of a specific income class? Over $150K and no one sees a penny, but you bet your bottom dollar they are still going to owe plenty on their taxes. Don't get me wrong I'm all for the economic stimulus, I am. I also want you to see that no matter which side of the fence you are in, there's still dirt and there's still grass.
As for the continual battle about "big corporations" and tax loopholes and all this other media filled frenzied stuff and the fantasies that Hollywood feed...is that really the fault of the government or is that reall the issue of greedy men and women, regardless of political standing? Hmmm, I'll take the latter too.
I hope this helps. Good luck on your paper. Hopefully your teacher grades fairly and not based on his or her own bias.

Reply:Their is a looming recession, it hasn't happened yet, but probably will. Anyway, the major cause is the housing market, and it actually mostly happened under Clinton's watch via Greenspan. Greenspan repeatedly promised it wouldn't be a problem, and just after he stepped down it fell apart. Most of the loans were made while Clinton was president, Clinton was pushing for home ownership of the lower class, and he did bring it up..... only to have it come crashing back down.

Reply:Bush has spent most of his presidency prosecuting and ill concieved war and little time paying attention to domestic issues. While corporate America has reaped huge profits, like Exxon/Mobil with it's record profits for any corporation ever; they have done so through outsourcing and on the backs of the American consumer, who is also paying record prices for gasoline and oil.
Of course Bush and Cheney have long ties to big oil, so they have done nothing to control these profits or prices.
The auto industry is hurting due to outsourcing, as is the manufacturingsector in general.
This is a crisis largely ignored by a president who has always had great wealth and never known what it is like to live from paycheck to paycheck as most Amicans do.
Additionally the administration bails out big banks, while leaving the consumers to fend for themselves.
Mortage foreclosures were up 57% last month alone.

This administration still offers nothing real to help consumers. The Senate and house are considering legislation, but the President may well veto anything they come up with, as he has most legislation sent to him by the democrats.
The tax rebates are considered by most economists as too little and too late to help the failing economy.
This recession is now underway in many areas of our country and will hit the entire nation probably in summer. Oil prices which have driven inflation of all good and especially food items has hit at a time when outsourcing has led to layoffs and the American people are being hit with a double whammy recession.
This is Bush's recession for sure.
Hope this helps.
Reply:Wrong on both counts. The recession has not het hit. Also, the Bush Presidency has little to do with wjhether we are in a recession.
Reply:There is no recession.

Um, why do people still support Bush?
My guess is that they are ignorant as to what the administration has really done to this country. So far the president has broken over 750 laws.
He should also be removed from office and indicted for treason for failing to uphold his oath in office. Check out his quotes on betraying the constitution when he pushed the Patriot Act:
During a White House meeting with GOP congressmen, some warned Bush of resistance to extending onerous provisions of the Patriot Act. QUOTE from Bush: “I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”
“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”
“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”
Um, why do people still support Bush?

Do you agree with Bush tapping all calls comming and going over seas from the USA?
Do you think Bush is right in tapping all phone calls from the USA to over seas?...Do you agree with having all the emails that pass through the USA monitored?...As an American Citizen..How do you feel about your rights under Bush?? How do you feel about Bush calling the constitution .."just a God damned piece of paper!!!"
Do you agree with Bush tapping all calls comming and going over seas from the USA?
I think that Bush is probably the worst president that U.S. has ever seen. Tapping into phone calls is a complete invasion of privacy. And if we can't have privacy, do we really have any rights at all??
Reply:i think it is good that BUSH protects us somehow and if this is the way, then so be it!

It is thought it automatically monitors phone calls, as it is alleged that a major BT trunk is routed through the UK site, Menwith Hill near Harrogate.
Reply:the government is NO tapping ALL calls coming in from overseas. That would be completely impossible for any government to perform that task.
Your rights have not been compromised in any way, shape or form. The only reason that your calls would be monitored would be because your were deemed some kind of a threat -- i say 'thank you Mr. President for protecting me and my family'.
Reply:While I disagree with what Bush admitted to doing (i.e. monitoring CERTAIN calls between Americans and foreigners), and believe he may have broken the law, the question is a bit misleading.
First off, the government does not (to my knowledge, please correct me) monitor e-mails within the country. ISP's may, but I doubt anyone would be stupid/crazy enough to risk that.
Second, the quote .."just a God damned piece of paper!!!" originated from Capitol Hill Blue, a VERY unreliable and biased source. If CNN or BBC or any, remotely mainstream media confirms it, fine, but right now, it's the word of a loony.
As for rights under the Bush Admin, yeah, they've been curtailed. That's what we get for picking John Kerry as our alternative. The Dems could've done a better job, they ruined 2004 with their stupid pick.

Does President Bush want to become Dictator?
The quote he made about the US Constitution around November/December of 2005... "“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!” Also he made another quote on May 22, 1999: "I think there ought to be limits to our freedom." Another quote on December 19, 2000: "If this were a Dictatorship, it would be a Heck of a Lot Easier, Just So Long as I'm the Dictator."

Bush Caused 9/11?
I'm writing a paper for my political science course, its a conspiracy theory that bush and his administration caused 9/11 as a means to go to war in iraq, I was wondeirng if anyone had any sources or heard anything that I could use for the paper, please don't bother criticizing, remember, its just a conspiracy theory

Go on youtube and scan for some profiles - a lot of them believe quite passionately in the subject and could probably write the paper for you!

Reply:Yes, I have some sources that not only show Pres. Bush and his Neocon Buddies caused 9/11, but Prove it. Few people know that the jet engine(s) found at the Pentagon crash site have been Identified as Pratt %26amp; Whitney JT8D's: This engine is too small to be used on a Boeing 757, but just right for a smaller military aircraft.

Most all the evidence that is available to us, show that the WTC buildings were rigged with explosives. Our own government had motive as was well as an opportunity to do this crime. Here is the evidence, presented for your scrutiny.
FAKE CONFESSION
The official government story is that the 9/11 attack was orchestrated by Al Qaeda, which is lead by Osama bin Laden. The proof our government provided was a video with Osama confessing to the crime. The problem with the video is that the person in the video does not look like Osama bin Laden: See picture.

EVIDENCE
There are many other factors that do not fit the official story. They include, secondary explosions that were seen, heard, reported, and recorded by firefighters, in and around the WTC buildings.

Molten, beyond red hot, "steel" was video recorded coming out of the South Tower just before it collapsed. Jet fuel does not burn hot enough to turn steel to liquid. Melted red hot steel was also found in "ground zero" of all three WTC buildings, including WTC7; the one no jet ever hit.

FORENSICS
A chemical analysis of the solidified molten iron, conducted by independent firms, yielded an explosive, called Thermite. Also found was a WTC core beam; most probably cut using the demolition cutting charge (Thermate). No core beams were left standing beyond a few feet high, for it to have been cut by an Iron Workers torch.

CONFESSION
We also have a video recording, where owner Larry Silverstein, admits to demolishing WTC7.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...
MOTIVE
The New Conservatives (Neo-Cons), started planning the invasion of Iraq, even before Pres. Bush took office. Apparently, the plan would include the attack of the WTC buildings. It did this to get the support of congress and the nation, to attack Iraq. Read it from their own PNAC document. Pay special attention to the section entitled "Creating Tomorrow's Dominant Force" page 50 and the top of page 51, where it states we need a new Pearl Harbor attack to get the ball rolling.
http://www.newamericancentury.org/Rebuil...
OPPORTUNITY
Witnesses saw a work crew going into the WTC buildings with rolls of wire, supposedly for internet upgrades. Tenants were moved around while crews "upgraded" the cable systems. The Port Authority cut power to the building for a whole weekend, just prior to the attack; shutting down the entire security systems. Witnesses also heard crews operating heavy hammering equipment that left a gray cement like dust, in the building. This activity took place just weeks before the 911 attack: The Port Authority had released control of the buildings to Larry Silverstein, six weeks prior to the attack: He made upwards of $5 billion off of the attack.

There is also strong evidence to support a Douglas A-3 Skywarrior armed with a missile hit the Pentagon. One thing we can be certain about; it was not a Boeing 757, as our government claims. Listen to this retired General, He says, "The Plane does not fit the hole; so what did hit the Pentagon...?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2VoUN-7R... (removed)
One might expect to see three holes in the pentagon, one for the main body and two more for each engine. The engine and engine parts were found outside of the building, they never penetrated the building thus no hole was created by them. The deep 18 foot hole was most probably made by an on board missile and not the aircraft itself. A radiation expert claims high-radiation readings near the Pentagon indicates depleted uranium (DU) munitions may have been used.
http://www.rense.com/general67/radfdf.ht...
Witnesses say, the U.S. military secretly had Raytheon Co. refit an A-3 Skywarrior with new jet engines, a missile, and a Global Hawk guidance system, just prior to 9/11. Coincidentally, five key executives of Raytheon Co. went missing on 9/11. The official word is they died in the hijacked planes on 9/11.
http://tomflocco.com/fs/WitnessesLink.ht...
The Jet engine(s) found may be key to identifying what type of aircraft hit the Pentagon: At the very least, they help determine a Boeing 757 did not hit the Pentagon. Both the jet engine housing as well as a "front end rotor head" have been identified as belonging to a Pratt %26amp; Whitney JT8D jet engine. The P%26amp;W JT8D engine has been used on the smaller Boeing 727 as well as a retrofit for the A-3 Skywarior. Two P%26amp;W JT8D's do not provide enough thrust to get a Boeing 757 off the ground much less sufficient power to perform the military precision maneuvers the aircraft in question did.

http://www.karlschwarz.com/02-02-05_Schw...
A photograph of a cracked windshield found at the crash site strongly resembles the top canopy glass found on the Skywarrior: No windows of this shape are found on a Boeing 757.
http://home.att.net/~carlson.jon/911Pent...
The landing gear is one part found in the crash site that may be linked to a Boeing 757. It could also be a part that was retrofitted on an A-3 Skywarrior, since the wheels would most likely need to be replaced with something still available.
http://www.pentagonresearch.com/084.html
A geometric analysis can show the aircraft that hit the Pentagon is under 85 feet long and therefore too small to be a Boeing 757, which is over 155 feet long. An A-3 Skywarrior is 76 feet 4 inches long. See geometric analysis: also see revision note under comments.

Attention: For those submitting questions of and to Virginia 9-11 Truth , please note: Virginia 9-11 Truth does not claim to have the answers to these questions, we too only continue to ask the questions to the official answer of "there is no official answer". All we are left with from the 9-11 Commission is, "there is no answer here, there is nothing to see, move along ". "Answers that don't answer, explanations that don't explain, conclusions that don't conclude." Over 80% of the questions from the 9-11 Family Steering Committee submitted to the 9/11 Commission were left unanswered.

I hope you do some good research and oust this administration for what they are; murderers.
Good luck on your paper. Report It

Reply:There is nothing wrong with questioning your government and its motive. Try watching 9/11 revisited or 9/11mysteries.You can watch them on google video.
Reply:Try reading popular mechanics for an opposing view point.
Reply:There are countless variations of a conspiracy theory today, and most back up their claims with the video footage used. For instance that there were cloaked helicopters, the planes were not the passenger planes described by the media and the government, that there were actually no planes at all (and it was created by a projector). Go on youtube and scan for some profiles - a lot of them believe quite passionately in the subject and could probably write the paper for you!
Reply:Conspiracy Theory=Nut job. Sorry, but far too many people would have had to have been behind it, and someone would have blabbed by now. So try something worthwhile.
Reply:Don't embarrass yourself by trying to prove a ridiculous conspiracy theory. It is an ugly lie and a sham.
Reply:Make one that Clinton caused it. I think the GW Bush one will get you in copy right violation from Hollywood as they are making a movie and own the rights.

Bush those running defecate on the Constitution, so why not support Dr. Paul?
The Constitution is a contract among the citizenry, it is also a compact among the states. The Constitution protects individual rights and states rights against a government that has the power to oppress.
The only Candidate who has voted consistently in line with the constitution (or would ask to have it amended but would not just ignore it) is Dr. Paul.
George Bush thinks the Constitution is just a "goddamn piece of paper. So many on the republican stage right now seem like Bush-bots. Dr. Paul is a refreshing change for the country. He knows that you must know history or you will be doomed to repeat it. Anytime he wants to bring up history, his opponents disparage him. They do not want to talk about something they know nothing about.
So, why vote for big government, anti-constitutionalists and not for Dr. Paul?
Ohh, and go ahead and accuse me of being part of his campaign effort. I laugh every time a small mind accuses that on here. I am seeking honest answers.
Bush those running defecate on the Constitution, so why not support Dr. Paul?
Ron Paul has no chance.
19 thumbs down.
Vote for Rudy!
Reply:Ron Paul is a scholar of the constitution and he is the only one in the entire congress who proves it with his voting record.
Reply:I like Ron's concepts, I just wish HE understood the constitution.
Reply:we need a democrat running this country....
CLINTON all the way...........
Reply:And here come the lunatic, crazy, kook, isolationist, anarchist, born-in-the-wrong-time slurs.
Let 'em roll.
You can't be liberal and support the constitution... by definition. Have you ever wondered what conservative and liberal meant? conservatives stick to the letter of the constitution, liberals ignore it.
So don't lecture Paul on not being conservative enough.

I'm sure that it was taken completely out of context. The republicans said those things cause they want to get voted in again and Bush is not popular now. I'm not a full fledged Bush supporter either but I am just trying to be objective about it. When Clinton was in I read all kinds of stuff that I thought was BS.
