New Orleans and Bush???

I am a New Orleanian and proud of it, I'm also a Katrina vicim. Do you think that Bush helped or hindered us? Do you think that Katrina is a race thing,there wasn't a big enough response because New Orleans is a prodominetly black city?What do you think can be done? I already know my opinion, and it might be biased. My house was sitting in 9 feet of water, just chillin there for 3 weeks. We just got all the mold out about 3 months ago. People are beyond stressed out, and we're getting scammed left and right. Then all of these illegal immigrants are flocking in here taking the jobs.There's an outrageous amount of cime. Bush came 5 days after the storm. Personally, I do blame Bush but not all the way. Our mayor who some idiots reelcted should be at fault along with the rest of the city and state government. Don't get me wrong the federal government is at fault too. I'm writing a paper and I would like to here some people's opinions. thanks and happy holidays.

Let me make this perfectly clear: the response to Katrina had nothing to do with race, it had to do with economics. To paraphrase the racist inciter known as Kanye West, President Bush doesnt care about poor people. To make this a racial issue is to do us all a disservice, as it only gets people angry with each other as opposed to placing the blame where it belongs; certainly there was some incompetence at the local level, but George "let me hook up my friends" Bush clearly showed us that Homeland Security et. al. have made us no safer. Before we try to prevent the Iraq Republican Guard from marching down Sepulveda Boulevard maybe we should devise a plan to protect us from a few feet of water.
Reply:I'm not completely sure that Bush is racist. I think he is an elitist to the point of being a sociopath. He only cares about himself and those that look after him, in so far as they look after him. After the hurricane those quickest to recieve aid were the oil companies as they still drove up prices and reported record profits. I think if somebody happens to be of a different race but has risen (financially not spiritually) to a position where they can rub Bush's back they will get there back rubbed too.
Reply:The state and local officials should certainly take some of the blame but Bush was the man in charge and buck stops there; your federal government abandoned you at the time you needed them most...the response to Katrina was indicative of the entire Bush administration: inept!
Reply:There were screwups on so many levels. Federal government was pathetic, as were the state and local. So there was plenty of blame to go around. Don't know what to tell you about the crime, from an outsiders perspective it looks like a cess pool down there. Only advice I can give you is to arm yourself well. Maybe the next disaster they won't take those away again.
Reply:I'm very sorry that you people are having the problems with the storm. i know how it is because i rode a few of them out in fl but i got out of there and went to higher ground. As for the fault of blame i think it lies squarely on the lap of our brilliant president. He should have been on top of that from the first notice of a storm even existing not six days after it hit new Orleans. they could have had all kinds of supplies to you people like food and drinking water the next morning after the storm. and i agree with you about the mayor all he did was try to get his name in the paper and get his face on TV. You propel need to can your mayor and Governor also and please help get that stupid Bush out of office

Reply:Bush doesn't seem to have the last say on major financial matters like disaster relief, I think there's a group he responds to that is dictating how our tax dollars get spent, and they will let another city die if there's a disaster - Sacramento, Ca has bad levees that have been ignored too, for example.

Reply:Blame the president??? Popular Science says no in their private investigation. They said supplies and help was there but the Gov and Mayor decided they didn't want the people to be squatters so they made them with hold supplies for 3 days. I remember when the gov. of Mississippi said the convoys of supplies come thru at the time. The levi's never would have broke had they used the money to repair them rather than use them for casino's. The investigation also said that the winds were no more than 50+ mph in the city, so it was the levis. More than enough money was sent down to get things going but like the MS gov warned it doesn't appear to have been put to the right use. And why aren't the people scattered all over the country like in my state sucking up welfare go back and help with the cleanup! Don't blame the president, the rest of the area seems to have gotten on with life, you need to ask why your people haven't followed.

and Alabama. New Orleans should be be torn down and rebuild on higher ground instead of where it is now.

Reply:You blame the President because he failed to show up for 5 days, it is not the Presidents responsibility to show up, he has people who show up for him and his presence would only slow things down. No President could or should be expected to show up and work to alleviate strife or pain, our President provided the services and money to help alleviate the problems. The Mayor of New Orleans should have been the first responder, and instead he allowed thousands of people to drown, when he could have utilized the school buses that were destroyed by the flood in helping the people without other means to be evacuated. You people of New Orleans need to look at your Mayor and impeach him, he made sure his family was safe and then he hid from his responsibilities in a high rise Hotel**
Reply:FEMA acted like a bureaucracy, what a surprise! Yes, the federal response is still pitiful, but it pales in comparison. Your governor and mayor played politics instead of getting the job done. Things still stink across the border, but the initial response, at least, in MS was much better because Barbour did something, and didn't stop the feds from coming in.

I live in Florida, which is very politically important in every Federal election because it is a large swing state. The previous year (2004) we had 4 major hurricanes hit our state. I was ready to evacuate 3 times, but never had to. It was a major election year. Jeb Bush was governor of Florida %26amp; up for re-election. George visited here several times that summer, %26amp; he %26amp; Jeb were in several photo ops together. There were minor problems in hurricane relief, but nothing major. People weren't starving. Help arrived in a somewhat timely manner.





Katrina was the worst natural disaster, money wise, ever %26amp; one of the worst in human terms in recent years. I realize the logistics of recovery was a nightmare, especially in the isolated areas. Still, in my view, govt response was slow %26amp; spotty. I was especially upset about the Federal response, though the city's sucked badly also. I'm not sure about race being an issue, but it was obvious the people were not a Federal priority after Katrina. The Powers that be just didn't seem to care, from Bush downward. All they seemed to want to do was interfere in local efforts %26amp; cast blame. Now all they seem to want to do is forget the huge problems remaining.
