Why is Bush always absent when bad things happen that he's responsible for but mourner in chief at VT?

By FRANK RICH

PRESIDENT BUSH has skipped the funerals of the troops he sent to Iraq. He took his sweet time to get to Katrina-devastated New Orleans. But last week he raced to Virginia Tech with an alacrity not seen since he hustled from Crawford to Washington to sign a bill interfering in Terri Schiavo's end-of-life medical care. Mr. Bush assumes the role of mourner in chief on a selective basis, and, as usual with the decider, the decisive factor is politics. Let Walter Reed erupt in scandal, and he'll take six weeks to show his face -- and on a Friday at that, to hide the story in the Saturday papers. The heinous slaughter in Blacksburg, Va., by contrast, was a rare opportunity for him to ostentatiously feel the pain of families whose suffering cannot be blamed on the administration.

But he couldn't inspire the kind of public acclaim that followed his post-9/11 visit to ground zero or the political comeback that buoyed his predecessor after Oklahoma City. The cancer on the Bush Whi te House, Iraq, is now spreading too fast. The president had barely returned to Washington when the empty hope of the ''surge'' was hideously mocked by a one-day Baghdad civilian death toll more than five times that of Blacksburg's. McClatchy Newspapers reported that the death rate for American troops over the past six months was at its all-time high for this war.

Why is Bush always absent when bad things happen that he's responsible for but mourner in chief at VT?
i think everybody is missing the forest for the trees.

bush is nothing but a part of the forest.

he's the one that grows to great heights and the gets far too heavy to support itself and just come a tumblin' down causing death and destruction to smaller, younger trees, all the way down.

if dick cheney would be scared of having to put in his resignation after America finds out what a slime ball he's been for decades upon decades, this would put pressure on the prezzy .

He would either reveal that he is the anti-Christ or he would just do another "Mission Accomplished" Remake, the movie.

Anything to boost morale, you know?

Yet another con job!

Reply:Thank you for choosing mine as the best answer. Report It

Reply:Cause he's busy reading The Pet Goat.

He still can't figure it out.
Reply:Hahaha! You are soooo right. He can send all those people off to war, but not attend a SINGLE funeral. It's horrendous. He's pathetic
Reply:While Frank Rich's column is, obviously, left-leaning, he makes an important and valid point: Bush does everything he can to avoid showing his face and having to make public statements about any problem, event, or scandal that could be somehow linked to failures of his administration. But he is quick to show up for any politically-charged event where he can be seen as a leader that doesn't reflect badly on his administration. This is just part and parcel to the Bush Administration policy of never apologizing, never admitting error, and never taking responsibility.

Obviously, Bush can't be at the funeral of every soldier who dies in Iraq. But he COULD do something like holding a monthly ceremony to honor them, read their names, lead our nation in mourning them. Has he? No way. Because that would look bad for HIM.
Reply:get a life only losers blame everything on bush when it wasn't his fault.
Reply:You base your feelings on a left-wing opinion piece?

Of course he can't attend every funeral from war. That's just ridiculous
Reply:To say that Bush skipped funeral is a typical lie....When my brothers unit lost 6 in Iraq he met in private....no media, the way we wanted. He has done this numerous times that your Bias will refuse to admit.

For Walter Reed, here is the Bias spin again. Though it is a disgrace...he has visited the wounded more than any Democratic leader...as for funding the budget was cut through the 90's and even though not up to where it should be it is 20 top 30 % higher than the Clinton years.

Sorry you agenda does not resonate....just a side bar Clinton never visited WTC after 93 attacks....I guess he knew he was going to let Bin Ladin go?
Reply:I know that you think he is all powerful, but he can't be in multiple places at one time... at least not yet. Darth Rove is working on the time space continuum machine along with the "clone project" and when complete all these problems can be solved with little effort.

Grow up! If you can't find a better source for comment than Frank Rich, just go back to your recliner.
Reply:Funny, what I don't understand, is how you can read the,

Bird cage liner, with all that poop on it !
Reply:You do understand the law of physics that says an object cannot occupy more than one space at any one time.

Who is your side going to offer as a replacement for Bush? If it's Hillary I'm betting the NEXT president will be a Republican.
Reply:Rich like most NYTimes writers are always willing to bash our President. Get a life.
Reply:Bush has spent over 50% of his time since elected, traveling for personal reasons or on vacation. We need a full time president. Hey U.S. citizens do you know where the president is? Bet it's not the White House or working.
Reply:The only cancer in the Bush admin. is liberalism. I see nothing in your rant about Polosi kissing terrorist *** or Gore lying about global warming. Or anything the Clinton's have ever done to take away your freedom.
Reply:You must be a liberal they blame him for everything get a life my Friend!!!
Reply:Over 100 brave men and women lost their lives in Iraq in April alone. Shame, shame, shame on Bush and the jingos that support his little war.
